Boundaries in space and time: Iconic biases across modalities

چکیده
The idea that the form of a word reflects information about its meaning has roots in Platonic philosophy, and been experimentally investigated for concrete, sensory-based properties since early 20th century. Here, we provide evidence an abstract property ‘boundedness’ introduces systematic, iconic bias on phonological expectations novel lexicon. We show this is general across events objects. In Experiment 1, subjects are systematically more likely to associate sign language signs end with gestural boundary telic verbs (denoting temporal boundaries, e.g., die, arrive) count nouns objects spatial ball, coin). Experiments 2–3, mapping acts conceptual representations, not grammatical features. Specifically, does carry over psychological (e.g. people than knowledge). Although these still syntactically encoded as either or mass, they do denote conceived having boundaries. thus breaks down. 4–5 replicate findings new set stimuli. Finally, 6–11, explore possible extensions similar spoken stimuli, mixed results. Generally, results here suggest words' referents (in space time) powerful effect intuitions regarding words should take.

Multiple lines of evidence indicate that visual attention's temporal properties differ between the left and right visual fields (LVF and RVF). Notably, recent electroencephalograph recordings indicate that event-related potentials peak earlier for LVF than for RVF targets on bilateral-stream rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) identification tasks. Might this hastened neural response render...

CAST is a coordination model designed to support interactions among agents executing on hosts that make up a mobile ad hoc network (MANET). From an application programmer’s point of view, CAST makes it possible for operations to be executed at arbitrary locations in space, at prescribed times which may be in the future, and on remote hosts even when no end-to-end connected route exists between ...
متن کاملContextual Logic with Modalities for Time and Space
1. Introduction Contextuality is trivially pervasive: all human experience takes place in endlessly changing environments and inexorably moving time frames. In order to have any meaning, the changing items must be placed within a more stable setting, a framework that is not subject to the same kind of contextual change. Total contextuality collapses into chaos, or becomes ineffable. While basic...

The German standard language and some of its dialects distinguish two types of directional adverbs, depending on the perspective taken in the speech event. For example, both SHG hinauf vs. herauf mean up. However, the two adverbs differ in that a motion verb modified by SHG hinauf will be construed not only as being UP(WARDS) but also as being AWAYFROM-(the)-ORIGO (we use the term origo to refe...
